Geeta Samota becomes First CISF personnel to conquer Mount Everest

On May 19, Monday, Geeta Samota became the first-ever CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) officer to conquer the tallest peak in the world , Mount Everest, which has a height of 8,848 m. She created history by becoming the first CISF officer to summit Mount Everest; her achievement signifies growing participation of women in adventures and challenging activities.

Who is Geeta Samota?

Geeta Samota belongs to the Sikar district of Rajasthan. She was raised in a village with her 4 sisters. Since childhood she wished to do something—something that usually boys do! Later, when she joined college, she started playing hockey and participated in various district and state-level competitions, but due to an injury, her sports career was halted.

Later on, she joined the paramilitary forces in 2011, and while she was training and practicing with her service mates, she discovered mountaineering. She liked the adventure, the thrill, and the nerves it took, So she decided to make it the purpose of her existence!

To start off her journey, she took a course in 2015, A Basic Guide to Mountaineering, which was offered at ITBP’s Auli institute, where she learned basic skills needed to start the trek and to prepare herself for the harsh conditions of the snowy Everest. And she was the only woman enrolled in that course.

To refine her skills and get ready for bigger challenges, Geeta Samota joined an advanced training course in 2017. This course helped her become stronger, learn important techniques, and build the confidence she needed for tough climbs. It played an important role in preparing her for future achievements like reaching the top of Mount Everest. By completing this course, she became the first-ever CAPF officer to do so.

She is currently posted at Udaipur Airport, a unit of CISF.

Her Achievements

In 2019, she climbed Mount Satopanth in Uttarakhand and Mount Lobuche in Nepal, which paved the way for her future, more ambitious treks.

She has created history before as well, when she scaled 4 peaks Mount Kosciuszko (Australia), Mount Elbrus (Russia), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), and Mount Aconcagua (Argentina) in a time span of just 6 months and 27 days—the fastest ever by an Indian woman. She also climbed 5 peaks in a record 3 days. Among them, three were higher than 6000 meters.

On International Women’s Day in 2023, the Delhi Commission for Women presented Geeta Samota with an award. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has also given her an award for her incredible and inspiring achievements.
