Army officer Shashank Tiwari drowns saving a fellow soldier in Sikkim

In a tragic incident, an Indian army officer Shashank Tiwari, was swept away by the running waters when he was trying to save another soldier who fell in the mountain stream while crossing a log bridge in Sikkim. Shashank Tiwari was leading the Patrol team to an operating base which was under development when the incident happened around 11 AM on Saturday morning

Shashank was found 800 meters downstream after 30 minutes of searching. The incident occurred when an Agniveer soldier, Stephen Subba, while crossing the log bridge, slipped in the stream flowing below. Lieutenant Shashank, who was leading the team, jumped in the flowing waters to save his fellow soldier Subba; another soldier, Naik Pukar Katel, also gave his support in rescuing the soldier, and they both saved him, but unfortunately the strong current took the 23-year-old Shashank with it.

Who was Army officer Shashank Tiwari?

Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari was a brave and selfless officer who displayed great valor in his short term of service. The young 23-year-old Shashank was commissioned to the services in December 2024.

The young officer hailed from Kaushalpuri Colony in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. While some media reporters talked to his family, they described him as very courageous and a top student who excelled in everything. He completed his education at a CBSE school and then gave his NDA exam, for which he was very dedicated and hardworking. After completing his training at the Defence Academy, he was posted in Sikkim in December. In his very short term of service, he displayed great selfless courage.

The officer’s father is a merchant navy officer who is currently posted in the USA. He was informed about the demise of his beloved son, and now he is returning back to the country to serve at his last rites. His mother has not been informed yet. Since she is going through some serious medical conditions, the family is waiting for the father to join before disclosing the tragic news.

The Indian Army and the Government pay honor to the Brave Officer

Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, a young and newly commissioned officer in the Indian Army, displayed remarkable courage and a strong sense of brotherhood. Despite having only a short time in service, he showed the highest level of bravery by sacrificing his life while trying to rescue a fellow soldier. His selfless act reflects the true spirit of the Indian Army—one built on values like honor, duty, and putting others before oneself.

In recognition of his bravery, both the Indian Army and the government paid him the highest tributes. A solemn wreath-laying ceremony with full military honors was held at Bengdubi Military Station. The ceremony was led by Lt. Gen. Zubin A. Minwalla, General Officer Commanding of Trishakti Corps. Later, Lt. Tiwari’s mortal remains were sent to his hometown for the final rites. Lt. Gen. R.C. Tiwari, another senior Army officer, said that Lieutenant Tiwari’s actions showed what it truly means to lead, even at a young age, and that his sacrifice would never be forgotten.

Leaders from across the country also expressed their grief and respect. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang shared his heartfelt condolences, saying that the young officer’s bravery and commitment to his duty would always be remembered with pride. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also honored the fallen hero by announcing ₹50 lakh in financial support for his family and promised that a memorial would be built to keep his memory alive.

Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari’s sacrifice is a reminder of the unbreakable bond among soldiers—a connection built on trust, courage, and a willingness to risk everything for one another. His story will inspire generations and remain a shining example of true heroism and selfless service to the nation.
